چکیده

BACKGROUND Intravenous drug misuse, principally heroin, occurs primarily in the Greater Dublin area. Methadone maintenance treatment has been an important part of the response to opiate misuse in Dublin since 1992. AIMS To determine the number of opiate-related deaths in Dublin City and County during 1999, to establish the number of methadone-related deaths and determine the proportion of deaths associated with methadone prescribed according to guidelines. METHODS A retrospective review of all coroners' inquest files in Dublin City and County during 1999 was undertaken. RESULTS There were 84 opiate-related deaths. Seventy-eight (92.9%) were male. Seventy-three (86.9%) had two or more drugs identified toxicologically. There were 45 methadone-related deaths, of which 15 (33.3%) were receiving methadone prescribed according to guidelines. CONCLUSION Opiate-related deaths occur primarily in males in the 25-34 year age group and are associated with a high level of polydrug use. A capture-recapture study of the prevalence and implications of opiate use in Dublin.

BACKGROUND To date there have been no studies estimating the hidden prevalence of opiate use in Dublin. METHODS A multisource enumeration followed by the application of the capture-recapture method with log-linear modelling including age and gender stratification to remove heterogeneity was implemented to provide an estimate of the unknown size of the opiate-using population. Two medical and ...

Temporal correlation between opiate seizures in East/Southeast Asia and B.C. heroin deaths: a transoceanic model of heroin death risk.

BACKGROUND Because heroin supply changes cannot be measured directly, their impact on populations is poorly understood. British Columbia has experienced an injection drug use epidemic since the 1980s that resulted in 2,590 illicit drug deaths from 1990-1999. Since previous work indicates heroin seizures can correlate with supply and B.C. receives heroin only from Southeast Asia, this study exam...

Take-home naloxone to prevent fatalities from opiate-overdose: Protocol for Scotland's public health policy evaluation, and a new measure to assess impact

Aims: Scotland was the first country to adopt take-home naloxone (THN) as a funded public health policy. We summarise the background and rigorous set-up for before/after monitoring to assess the impact on high-risk opiate-fatalities. Methods: Evidence-synthesis of prospectively monitored small-scale THN schemes led to a performance indicator for distribution of THN-kits relative to opiate-relat...
